Broken Granite Repaired

Granite Island Top Severely Damaged

Our Boston clients were worried they would have to replace their granite island top, because the corner had completely broken off and it was in several pieces. They decided to give us a call for a FREE estimate and to see whether they could have it repaired and avoid the cost of completely replacing the island top.

We assured the homeowners we could repair the countertop to a like-new condition and showed them images of similar jobs so they would know what to expect. After comparing the cost of a new countertop with the cost of repairs, they decided to go ahead and schedule us for the job.

Our Granite Repair and Refinishing Process

The first step in repairing this countertop was to reassemble the pieces of stone, carefully aligning and leveling each piece. We glued the pieces together and filled in missing sections with tinted epoxy that matched the original stone. We gave the repaired piece plenty of time to dry and then firmly affixed it to the island top.

To achieve a uniform, reflective finish, we ground the surface of the island top flat, and then honed and polished it to restored the finish. Finally, we sealed the granite to inhibit staining.

Our clients were happy to have avoided paying thousands of dollars more for a replacement island countertop and they were very satisfied with the outcome.

Unfilled Travertine Floor Restoration

Problem:

This 100-year-old travertine floor was in poor shape. Travertine is a type of stone that has naturally occurring holes. Over the years, people had attempted to fill in these holes, but with improper cleaning and care, the fillers popped out.

Solution:

We used degreasers to clean, agitated with a floor machine, and a high pressure extractor to remove the dirt and grime from deep within the holes. After the stone completely dried, we used traverfill to fill in the holes. We diamond honed and polished to bring the finish to a slightly polished soft matte sheen.

Marble Floor Polishing

The Problem

The elegance of this Botticino marble floor was diminished by severe etching and stained grout lines.

Etching is often mistaken for “water spots” or staining, but it’s actually corrosion, in this case, due to improper cleaning products, that alters the surface of the marble. Etching on a polished surface, like this bathroom floor, is especially noticeable because it gives the marble a rough texture. Bacteria, allergens, and contaminants collect on the textured surface, and no amount of cleaning can resolve the problem.

Grout is a porous surface, which means it is full of tiny holes. With traffic and use, dirt and grime collect in these tiny holes. Every time the floor is cleaned, the unwanted substances are only driven further into the grout. Eventually the appearance of the grout becomes unsightly.

Our Solution

First, we deep cleaned the grout, extracting the contaminants from deep within the porous surface, and then we diamond honed the marble to remove the damaged surface (etches), revealing the brand new marble surface underneath. Finally, we polished the marble, giving it showroom-worthy luster and elegance and sealed the grout lines so that dirt and grime could no longer collect in the porous surface.

As you can see the floor now looks brand new. The owner, who also owned other luxury condo units in the same building, was so happy with our work that he asked us to do marble restoration work in other units.

Marble Vanity Top

The Problem

The beautiful white crystals and veins, characteristic of Emperador dark marble, were obscured by damage to this vanity top, including etching and small chips and cracks.

Etching is often mistaken for “water spots” or staining, but it’s actually corrosion, in this case, due to improper cleaning products and residue from cosmetics, that alters the surface of the marble. Etching on a polished surface, like this vanity top, is especially noticeable because it gives the marble a rough texture. Bacteria, allergens, and contaminants collect on the textured surface, and no amount of cleaning can resolve the problem.

Our Solution

First, we protected the surrounding areas with tape and plastic, forming a “tent” all the way around the work area. This is standard procedure for any work we do. Our marble diamond honing process removed the etching and other damage, and our marble polishing process gave this vanity top a luxurious shine. We sealed and enhanced the marble to give it a rich, dark, glossy appearance and protect it from future damage.
